MERCY MALAYSIA, SPUP COLLABORATE TO ENHANCE COMMUNITY RESILIENCE THRU PFA TRAINING

A Psychological First Aid (PFA) Training of Trainers program was conducted at SPUP on February 10-14, 2025. The program was made possible through the collaborative undertaking between MERCY Malaysia and SPUP. The intensive training aimed to arm Community Development Center (CDC) staff, faculty volunteers, and community partners with vital skills necessary to offer immediate psychological support in times of crisis. Participants engaged in a variety of activities, including interactive lecture-discussions, simulation exercises, and self-care practices, all designed to enhance their capabilities to respond to distress and foster resilience within their communities.
Key speakers for the training included Ms. Sharima Ruwaida Abbas (Senior Lecturer of Social Work, Universiti Utara Malaysia) and Ms. Aina Izzati Muslan, (MHPSS Officer of MERCY Malaysia and National MHPSS Consultant for UNICEF Malaysia) both of whom provided invaluable insights and guidance throughout the course. Additionally, several experts from MERCY Malaysia also enhanced the training experience. Ms. Nuraini Rudi (Senior Programme Officer), Ms. Siti Fatimah Binti Hassan, (Manager, Stakeholder Engagement and Communications) and Ms. Donna Rubio (Member, Board of Trustees) facilitated the sessions towards enhancing mental health support systems by empowering local leaders to respond effectively in times of need.
With their newly acquired knowledge and skills, participants are now poised to conduct further training sessions for those involved in the Disaster Risk Financing initiative, part of the broader Cagayan Consortium effort. The program concluded with participants’ affirmation of commitment in building a more compassionate, resilient, and prepared community amid crises.
