The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has granted autonomous status to St. Paul University Philippines (SPUP). This recognition places the University among the 77 Autonomous and 15 Deregulated Private Universities and Colleges in the Philippines awarded by CHED on November 24, 2024, at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC). Moreover, it is the only autonomous Private University in Tuguegarao City and in Cagayan Province. The award was accepted by Sr. Merceditas Ang, SPC (University President), Dr. Agripina Maribbay (Vice-President for Academics), and Dr. Ma. Leodevina Batugal (Head, Quality Assurance) representing SPUP.
This designation acknowledges the University’s tradition of excellence, quality of education, commitment to leadership, and sustainable operations and services. In his remarks, Dr. Prospero de Vera (Chairman, CHED) noted that autonomous and deregulated private institutions, which make up less than 6 percent of all universities and colleges, represent the pinnacle of educational excellence in the nation.
Prior to the awarding ceremonies, CHED, through Memorandum Order No. 7, series of 2024, released the list of Autonomous and Deregulated Private Universities and Colleges in September 2024.
