St. Paul University Philippines’ (SPUP) PhD in Nursing students took a significant step in advancing their global competence as they completed a weeklong educational and cultural immersion in Japan from August 24 to 29, 2025. The international exposure formed part of their course on International Nursing Education and Administration, designed to strengthen their understanding of health systems and nursing practices beyond the Philippine context.
The group visited hospitals, attended academic lectures, and engaged in cultural activities across the prefectures of Kagawa, Kochi, and Tokushima. The immersion was supervised by Dr. Tetsuya Tanioka, (Professor at Tokushima University and part-time faculty of SPUP’s Graduate School), assisted by Ms. Krishan Soriano, (PhD in Health Sciences Student, Tokushima University and Faculty, SPUP College of Nursing). Through this program, the students gained firsthand experience of Japan’s unique approach to health care—where cutting-edge technology is seamlessly integrated with compassionate patient-centered care.
Lectures emphasized the balance of innovation and human touch in improving patient outcomes and sustaining high-quality health services. Students observed clinical practices in diverse health care settings, engaged in dialogues with health professionals, and reflected on how global insights can inform and enhance their future contributions to nursing education, research, and practice.
By the end of the week, the PhD in Nursing students not only deepened their appreciation of Japan’s health care system but also strengthened their vision of advancing global nursing standards. The immersion reaffirmed SPUP’s commitment to nurturing nurse-leaders equipped with international perspectives and competencies essential in today’s interconnected world.
