May 10, 2017 - The SPUP Family culminated the celebration of the 110th Founding Anniversary of the University with an array of thanksgiving activities. The event started with a Eucharistic Celebration held at the Our Lady of Chartres Chapel. The Thanksgiving Mass was celebrated in “Coram Episcopo.” Msgr. Diosdado Talamayan (Archbishop Emeritus of the Archdiocese of Tuguegarao), presided the mass and was celebrated by Fr. Gerard Ariston Perez (Parish Priest of St. Peter’s Cathedral Parish). Eleven diocesan and religious priests concelebrated in the Holy Mass.

In the presence of the SPC Sisters, faculty, staff, alumni, guests, visitors and students, Msgr. Talamayan, in his homily, expressed his gratitude to the SPC Sisters for their work of evangelization through SPUP in the Archdiocese of Tuguegarao. The prelate expressed his elation to the transformation of SPUP from a humble school, established beside the then St. Peter’s Church (now St. Peter’s Cathedral), to a flourishing University. The Archbishop-Emeritus compared SPUP as the “light” of all Paulinian Schools in the country by recalling the evangelizing zeal of the SPC Sisters in Tugugerao through their catechetical activities, educational ministry, devotions and service even to difficult times. He said, “Just like the child Jesus who grew in wisdom and in age before God and men. SPUP has grown in its mission of educating the youth, service to the poor, and celebration of God’s love in Faith.”

The Thanksgiving Mass was followed by the SPUP@110 Launching Program at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Training Center (Global Center). Dr. Allan Peejay Lappay (Director, Alumni, External Relations and Advocacies) explained the significance of the occasion and provided an overview of the activities for the celebration. In her message, Sr. Merceditas Ang, SPC (University President), expressed her gratitude for God’s blessing for “the beautiful gift of SPUP as it continues its mission and work in the tradition of holistic Paulinian education by educating the young, serving the poor, and celebrating God’s love.”

The program was made more meaningful as the Philippine Postal Corporation (PhlPost) headed by Mr. Luis Carlos (Assistant Postmaster General) led the Launching and Unveiling of SPUP’s Commemorative Cover. This was followed by the Signing of the official first day cover by Mr. Luis Carlos and Sr. Merceditas Ang, SPC. Atty. Lori Ann Atal (Director, PhlPost NorthEast Luzon Area), Ms. Joy Cacho (PhlPost, Marketing Specialist), Sr. Carmelita Villanueva, SPC (Superior, SPUP-SPC Community), Sr. Marissa (VP for Administration) Dr. Agripina Maribbay (VP for Academics and Dr. Jeremy Godofredo Morales (Director, International Relations) served as witnesses. In his message, Mr. Carlos congratulated SPUP for the celebration and for its noble contribution in the formation of the youth through education.

The SPUP-SPC pamphlet entitled: “Celebrating God’s Love at 110: From Levesville to Tuguegarao” was presented by Sr. Mercedes Bacaoco, SPC (Director, Christian Formation). Accordingly, the booklet traced the historical and spiritual affinity of SPUP in Tuguegarao to Fr. Louis Chauvet, the Founder of the SPC Congregation in France. The pamphlet will be soon distributed to the members of the SPUP Family. Moreover, the video presentation of SPUP Through the Years gave a nostalgic mood to the gathering as memories were relieved by the images of distant and recent past. The AVP of SPUP’s history was made possible by Mr. Rucelj Pugeda, (SITE Faculty) and his students.

SPUP’s International Students rendered intermission numbers presenting their cultural dances. The Launching Program ended with Community Singing of the Paulinian Hymn followed by a Thanksgiving Lunch. The week-long celebration culminated with a Cultural Show where students of the Basic Education Unit (BEU) flooded the stage with splendid exhibition of Philippine festivals through dances.
