Nine (9) students from Tokushima University, Japan, recently embarked on an enriching academic and cultural journey at St. Paul University Philippines (SPUP) on February 24 – March 8, 2025. The program, designed to enhance their English language proficiency and provide immersive cultural experiences, proved to be an invaluable opportunity for cross-cultural learning and personal growth. The participants were: Mr. Kogiso Kenta, Ms. Nii Haruka, Mr. Sumida Taichi, Ms. Yamamoto Mei, Ms. Hiroshiwa Akari, Mr. Miyake Yuki, Ms. Hosokawa Ena, Ms. Matsuo Momoka, and Mr. Akiyama Toshiya.
During their stay at SPUP, the Japanese students engaged in an intensive English language training program. This program was meticulously structured to develop their communication skills through interactive lessons, group discussions, and hands-on activities. With the guidance Dr. Concepcion Doyugan (Head, Intercultural Institute for Languages), assisted by students of Bachelor of Arts in English Language Studies (ABELS), the international students honed their proficiency in both written and spoken English, preparing them to thrive in global academic and professional environments. Apart from language learning session, the students also attended lectures, workshops and laboratory applications on various academic programs, including Information Technology, Public Administration, Biology and Pharmacy.
The program also featured a cultural immersion component, allowing the Japanese students to experience the rich heritage of the Philippines. They toured SPUP campus, conducted courtesy calls, and visited SPUP’s Heritage Center. Moreover, the Paulinian Student Government (PSG) facilitated their City Tour, visiting historical and cultural landmarks in Tuguegarao City and the Cagayan Museum and Historical Research Center. Moreover, one of the highlights of their activities was their visit in the Indigenous Peoples’ Community at Awichon Village (Lubuagan, Kalinga), where they learned traditional crafts, music, and dances from local community members. These activities deepened their appreciation of Filipino traditions and showcased the importance of preserving cultural heritage. They also took part in an eco-tour at Callao Cave (Peñablanca, Cagayan), which introduced them to the region’s natural beauty and environmental conservation efforts.
Through this academic and cultural immersion program, the Tokushima University students gained invaluable experiences that went beyond classroom learning. A closing program facilitated by the School of Arts, Sciences and Teacher Education (SASTE) was held on March 7, 2025. They returned to Japan with improved English skills, a deeper understanding of Filipino culture, and a renewed sense of global citizenship. The collaboration between Tokushima University and SPUP continues to strengthen international bonds while promoting cross-cultural exchange and mutual respect.
