The Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP) hosted Special Learning Session (No.31), titled “Partnership in Energy and Peace: What the Middle East Tension Teaches Schools and Societies”. Held on April 24, 2026, at 3:00 PM via Zoom, the webinar addressed the widespread anxiety caused by geopolitical tensions, skyrocketing fuel costs, and rising inflation. The session provided a vital space for educators and students to analyze and discuss these disruptions and explore how to lead with clarity and compassion during times of global uncertainty.
In the session, Sr. Merceditas Ang, SPC, (President of St. Paul University Philippines and CEAP Trustee-at-Large), introduced the P.E.A.C.E. Compass. This strategic framework was designed to transform global challenges into actionable institutional paths. Her sharing was grounded in the proactive engagement and initiatives of SPUP. The compass points to the following practical pillars for navigating crises: P – Peace Education and Prophetic Hope (Embedding of peace as a core component of character formation and academic strategy, and the shift from a passive vision to active and transformative of future); E – Ethical Energy Conservation (Moving beyond cost-cutting to a moral imperative); A- Adaptive Learning and Innovation (Employing resilience as a shield against disruptions, ensuring academic continuity through flexible modalities); C – Compassionate & Conscientious Global Perspectives (Fostering an empathetic outlook that recognizes the local resonance of international economic and political shifts); and E – Ecological Stewardship and Sustainability (Rejecting a “take-make-waste” mindset in favor of ethical resource management and strategic partnerships).
The framework emphasized that resilience serves as a proactive shield against disruptions, particularly through the use of technology and sustainable infrastructure. Sr. Merceditas highlighted SPUP’s efforts, such as integrating peace education across the curriculum, implementing strict energy-saving protocols, and engaging in student-led innovations to foster “Tech for Good”. By promoting ecological conversion and interfaith dialogue, the session demonstrated how institutions can transition from a “culture of waste” to a model of systemic and moral stewardship.
The presentation concluded with a reimagined G.P.S. (commonly known as Global Positioning System) to direct schools toward Light and Hope. This model urged institutions to be anchored in Grounding in Values and Vision, to seek Participation through Inclusive and Collaborative Action, and to treat Sustainability as a Strategic and Moral Imperative. By operationalizing these values, Sr. Merceditas remarked that schools could boldly navigate the complexities of the present time, transforming every geopolitical challenge into a steadfast journey toward peace and stability.
