September 24, 2025 – Sr. Merceditas Ang, SPC, (University President), delivered a presentation on “Sustainable AI Applications and Innovations for Betterment of Humanity” at the WURI Global Conference at Tongmyong University, Busan, South Korea. Under the category, “SDG‑based Response to Global Challenges,” Sr. Merceditas framed sustainable AI as ethics‑driven, community‑centered and low‑carbon and urged educators and innovators to prioritize local involvement and environmental responsibility in AI development.
She highlighted SPUP’s student‑led, community‑embedded projects as concrete examples: TRISSEA, a mobile app for real‑time route tracking, safety alerts and driver ratings adopted by tricycle drivers in Tuguegarao; SANCTIPURIFY, an AI‑enabled water monitoring and purification system serving families and several elementary schools in Apayao; and SIDS (Smart Irrigation Drip System), which optimizes subsurface drip irrigation using soil moisture and flow monitoring to support farming families.
The presentation prompted interaction with conference delegates, generating multiple expressions of interest in collaboration and follow‑up support. With the positive feedback, organizers said the session underscored a growing appetite for practical, ethics‑oriented AI projects that deliver measurable social and environmental benefits as the WURI conference continues.
