St. Paul University Philippines (SPUP) successfully served as the host for the “Universities at the Crossroads: Innovating Sustainable Futures” conference on March 20-21, 2026. The event officially commenced with opening remarks from Mr. Marco Alfredo M. Benitez, (President of PACU and the Philippine Women’s University), who set the tone for the two-day gathering. Sr. Merceditas O. Ang, SPC, (President of SPUP), then welcomed a distinguished assembly of academic visionaries to the university campus. This high-impact agenda brought together leaders from across the sector to ignite a landmark transformation in Philippine education. The collaborative efforts of SPUP, the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities (PACU), and the Private Education Assistance Committee (PEAC) underscored a shared commitment to a sustainable tomorrow.
The first day featured intensive sessions led by prominent university leaders who explored the complexities of institutional leadership and resource management. Dr. Vicente K. Fabella, (President of Jose Rizal University), opened the discussions with a deep dive into governance and strategic leadership. Financial sustainability remained a top priority as Mr. Leopoldo Jaime N. Valdes, Jr., (President of Holy Angel University), and Dr. Louie A. Divinagracia, (Chancellor of the University of the East), shared resource-saving strategies. Sr. Merceditas O. Ang, SPC, (President of SPUP), along with Dr. Joselito C. Gutierrez, (Executive Assistant to the President of Saint Louis University), led a vital segment on community culture and environmental stewardship. The session wrapped up with a guided campus tour, followed by a welcome dinner featuring a showcase of cultural performances.
The final day surged forward with a focus on academic quality, innovation, and navigating complex regulatory landscapes. Dr. Patricia Bustos-Lagunda (President of Baliuag University), Dr. Renato C. Tanchoco, Jr. (President of Manila Central University), and Prof. Cheryl R. Peralta (Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs at the University of Santo Tomas) provided a roadmap for redefining excellence. Legal and administrative experts, including Dr. Ester A. Garcia (President Emeritus of the University of the East) and Atty. Anna Maria D. Abad (Legal Counsel of PACU), then guided participants through legislation and compliance. Dr. Ma. Socorro M. Eala, (President of San Pablo Colleges and Chairperson of the PACU Programs and Projects Committee), delivered the closing remarks to synthesize the two-day exchange. The event concluded with immersive tours organized and coordinated by SPUP, featuring a pilgrimage to the Basilica of Our Lady of Piat, an eco-tour of Callao Cave in Peñablanca, or a city tour around Tuguegarao.
