St. Paul University Philippines, in partnership with the AI ASEAN Ready Programme and the ASEAN Foundation, with support from Google.org, joined the global celebration of UNESCO’s Global Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Week 2025 through an engaging hybrid event themed “Minds Over AI: Media and Information Literacy”, last October 29, 2025.
Held at the SPUP campus and via MS Teams, the event featured interactive learning sessions titled “Hour of Code: Learn AI and Coding in a Fun & Engaging Way!” and “AI and Combating Fake News and Misinformation.” The activity was participated in by almost 400 SPUP faculty administrators, faculty members, staff, and students.
The program opened with a prayer led by Ms. Stephanie Malana of the Christian Formation team, followed by the singing of the Philippine National Anthem. In her welcome remarks, Dr. Agripina Maribbay, the Vice President for Academics and Quality Assurance, emphasized the importance of equipping Paulinians with digital discernment and AI literacy to thrive in an information-saturated age.
The highlight of the event was the talk by Ms. Christine Gapuz, an AI Ready ASEAN Programme Master Trainer and ASEAN Digital Literacy Programme Master Trainer, and a member of the Break the Fake Movement. Drawing from her intensive background in digital communication, Ms. Gapuz discussed how artificial intelligence shapes information access and dissemination, and how users can critically evaluate online content to combat fake news and disinformation.
In the synthesis of discussions, several key insights from the session were underscored. First, it emphasized that artificial intelligence is a powerful yet fallible tool that requires critical thinking and ethical discernment. It was also noted that it is important to maintain a balanced outlook, as AI has the capacity both to generate misinformation and to aid in its detection. Furthermore, it was emphasized that digital and media literacy are crucial in fostering informed and responsible digital citizens, and that educators play a pivotal role in guiding students toward thoughtful and ethical engagement with AI technologies. In a nutshell, every user must keep our minds over AI. To lead with discernment, creativity, and ethics, ensuring that humanity remains the master of innovation, not its mere consumer.
The program concluded with the presentation of certificates to SPUP and to Ms. Gapuz, as valuable partners in promoting digital literacy, responsible AI use, and media education for all. The closing prayer was led by Ms. Cherry Morgado of the CF team.
Through this celebration, SPUP further cements its commitment to fostering AI and media literacy for the common good, empowering the Paulinian community to uphold truth and compassion in the digital age.
