SPUP MED STUDENTS PRESENT STUDIES AT FAMILY MEDICINE CONFAB IN SOUTH KOREA

Busan, South Korea – A group of third-year medical students from SPUP-School of Medicine (SOM) has achieved a significant milestone, transforming classroom ideas and countless hours of dedication into a globally recognized accomplishment. Five of their research papers were accepted for presentation at the 2025 World Organization of Family Doctors Asia Pacific Regional Conference (WONCA-APRC), held last April 24–27, marking a career-defining experience for these budding medical professionals. The WONCA-APRC conference serves as a major gathering for esteemed family medicine experts and researchers from across the Asia-Pacific region, showcasing a diverse range of scholarly work in the field. The team from SPUP-SOM distinguished themselves through rigorous research, demonstrating their commitment to advancing primary care and community health.
Among their outstanding contributions, three papers were featured in oral presentations. Ciara Lagmay and Margielyn Danguilan presented a study titled “A Comparative Study on the Utilization of Maternal Health Services in Tuguegarao City Before and During the Covid-19 Pandemic,” which provided valuable insights into changes in maternal health patterns influenced by the pandemic’s challenges. Elmer Salvador, alongside co-authors Hamilcah Layugan and Cristelle Gale Pascual, delivered a compelling presentation on “A Cross-Sectional Study on the Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) of Adult COVID-19 survivors in Tuguegarao City, Cagayan.” This impactful research, nominated for the prestigious Travel Award Competition, highlighted significant contributions to understanding post-COVID-19 recovery. Additionally, Jeff Fabroz, supported by co-authors Aurea Sosa, Mark Sergio Turingan, and Cherry Macnas, explored “The Effect of Standard Care Versus Standard Care with Palliative Care on the Quality of Life of Cancer Patients: A Meta Analysis,” offering a comparative view on care approaches for enhancing patient quality of life.
Accepted for poster presentation category were, the study on “Unplanned Pregnancies Among Contraceptive Users and Non-Contraceptive Users in Tuguegarao City: a Cross-Sectional study” was presented by Ma. Jasmin Achanzar with Angelika Asuncion as co-author, examining critical aspects of family planning and contraception. Additionally, the analysis on the “Effectiveness of COVID-19 Vaccines Among Healthy Adult Individuals: A Meta-Analysis,” was spearheaded by presenter Joanna Camella Quines with co-authors Cyndy Ed Lorrainne Pugeda, Janelle Marie Tuddao, James Masirag, Melody Sawit, and Bernilem Joi Simangan. This research was also nominated for the Travel Award Competition, emphasizing its critical relevance on a global scale.
Participating in the WONCA 2025 offered the students a unique opportunity to engage with leading minds in family medicine, providing both inspiration and reinforcement of their capabilities. The experience stands as a proud moment for the Paulinian community, demonstrating that the values of excellence, compassion, and dedication to service transcend geographic and cultural boundaries.
