June 7-9, 2019 - SPUP’s Graduate School spearheaded the conduct of the Regional Seminar on Transformative Leadership and Governance at the Mo. Madeleine Hall. The conference bannered the theme: “Transformative Leadership in the 4th Industrial Revolution” and was participated in by over one thousand educators and students.

The three-day seminar had the following roster of speakers with their discussions: Dr. Estela Carino (Regional Director, DepEd Region II) on “Educating for the Fourth Industrial Revolution;” Fr. Adalbert Barut (Superintendent, Tuguegarao Archdiocesan Schools System) on “Spirituality in the Fourth Industrial Revolution;” Dr. Edizon Fermin (CHED Technical Panel for Teacher Education) on “Glocalizing Research in the Fourth Industrial Revolution;” Dr. Virginia Liquigan (CHED Technical Panel for Teacher Education) on “Transformative Leadership in the Fourth Industrial Revolution,” “Teaching for Change: Engaging in Transformative Education,” and, “Models for Transformative Education;” and Sr. Merceditas Ang, SPC (University President, SPUP) on “Leadership and Governance Challenges and Opportunities in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.”

The academic gathering ended with acknowledgement and thanksgiving.

SR. MERCEDITAS CONFERRED WITH THE PHILIPPINES EDUCATION LEADERSHIP AWARD

Sr. Merceditas Ang, SPC (University President) was conferred the Philippines Education Leadership Award on June 7, 2019 at Dusit Thani, Makati City. The honor was bestowed by the Asian Confederation of Businesses with CMO Asia as its Strategic Partner and Stars of the Industry Group as a research partner.

The award was presented to Sr. Merceditas in recognition of her Exemplary Leadership, Innovation, Academic and Industry Interface and Engagement in Building future leaders.

SHARING BLESSINGS WITH THE SPUP ADOPTED INDIGENOUS COMMUNITY

On June 5, 2019, SPUP celebrated their partnership with their adopted Indigenous People’s’ community in Brgy. Agugaddan, Penablanca, Cagayan. The IP community graciously welcomed the SPUP community composed of SPC Sisters, Administrators, Students and Staff.

Prior to the thanksgiving activity, the Community Extension Services Office (CES) conducted basic and functional literacy program to the children in the community. The children gleefully participated in the undertaking, while SPUP students joined them in their playing. As the SPC Sisters led the gift-sharing, smiles were painted in their faces and their eagerness to receive their blessing signalled a ray of hope to those who were present. School supplies and hygiene kits were given to them as presents.

The IP adult members had an opportunity to share stories and exchange pleasantries to the participating members of SPUP. They were also blessed with some household merchandise.

Sr. Merceditas Ang, SPC (University President), Sr. Marisa Tumbali, SPC (VP for Administration) and Mrs. Noemi Cabaddu (Director, CES) inspected the restroom and waterwork projects of SPUP for the community.

A simple snack shared by SPUP concluded the visit and celebration.

(The IP Community of Agugaddan is one of the hubs of SPUP’s program-based service learning programs.)

MAP – AIM BOOSTS REGION 2 EDUCATORS FOR 4TH IR

To capacitate educators in the Cagayan Valley Region in their role as curriculum implementers in today’s Fourth Industrial Revolution (4th IR or FIRe), the Management Association of the Philippines (MAP) and the Asian Institute of Management (AIM), in cooperation with St. Paul University Philippines (SPUP), conducted the Management Educators Workshop (MEW) at the Global Center, SPUP on May 27-28, 2019.

The first activity of MAP in Northern Philippines, said workshop was participated in by teachers from the basic education unit (BEU), higher education institution (HEI), and other organizations in the region and was framed by the theme “Management Education: Challenges and Opportunities in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.”

In her welcome remarks, Sister Merceditas Ang, SPC (University President), said, “Today, students face a world transformed by technology. The 4th IR is changing the way we think and live. We must figure out how humanity could co-exist with humanoids.”

Prof. Matthew George Escobido, Adjunct Professor of AIM and Chair of MAP Management Development Committee, said in his statement of purpose that the “MEW is a bridge between the academe and the industry to see what is out there, not just to build a better Philippines but better Filipinos as well.”

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Region 2 Director IV Dr. Julieta M. Paras presented the initiatives and innovations of CHED in response to paradigm shifts such as the ASEAN integration, internationalization of education, and the K to 12 Curriculum which have changed the educational landscape in the country. In particular, she gave updates on the beneficiaries of Republic Act (RA) 10931 or the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act as well as the recipients of scholarships of the CHED K to 12 Transition Program, among others.

Dr. Donald Patrick Lim, Chair of MAP Communications Committee and CEO of Dentsu Aegis Network (DAN) Philippines, talked in his lecture about the digital disruptions in management education. He stressed on the importance of collective social intelligence (CSI), nanodegree programs, and digital collaboration. As a challenge, Dr. Lim asked, “How can we reinvent our institutions to respond to our stakeholders’ needs?”

On the other hand, key officials of different business and government organizations shared the innovations and expectations from their respective industries. Their talks served as inputs to enrich curriculum development across academic disciplines. Ms. Olivia Limpe Aw, President and CEO of Destileria Limtuaco and Company, Inc., discussed the current and future demands of the manufacturing industry while Ms. Helen Macasaet, Chair of MAP ICT Committee, explained the requisites of the information communication technology (ICT) sector.

Also, Mr. Jessie Carpio, Co-Vice Chair of MAP Management Development Committee and Division Head of Audit & Assurance, P&A Grant Thornton, talked on innovations and expectations from the perspectives of accountancy; Mr. Oscar Torralba, Co-Vice Chair of MAP AgriBusiness Committee and Chair of CHED Technical Panel for Business and Management Education Program, lectured from the standpoint of agribusiness; and Usec. Alma Rita Jimenez, former undersecretary of the Department of Tourism (DOT), President and CEO of Health Solutions Corporation, and Vice Chair of MAP CEO Conference Committee, talked on the same topic from the point of view of tourism and health.

After the lectures, a panel discussion ensued where the speakers responded to queries and concerns from the participants. Dr. Federico Macaranas, Adjunct Professor of AIM, facilitated the discussion. During the exchange, Usec. Jimenez underscored the need for educators to find ways to make the curriculum relevant and responsive – to solve the issue on skills mismatch so that graduates fit appropriately with the jobs offered by their future workplaces.

The second day focused on workshop sessions as participants were grouped into learning teams. Prof. Escobido led the first workshop on the “Introduction to the Tools of the Fourth Industrial Revolution” while Dr. Macaranas facilitated the “Skills Mismatch: Industrial Revolution 4.0 and Education 2.0” workshop. Group presentations capped each workshop session.

SPUP SHS STUDES IMMERSE IN MALAYSIA

In compliance with the Department of Education Immersion program, forty- three senior high school students under the Science and Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and Accountancy and Business Management (ABM) strands participated in the International Immersion Program at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on May 14- 26, 2019. The program offers a variety of activities which range from academic exposure, outdoor adventure and service learning.

Realizing the university’s vision and mission in creating academic ties with foreign counterparts who aim for academic excellence, the immersion program was in partnership with Newton College and Karisma International College which was organized by Ms. Sri Devi Aynaru, project manager and international trainer. During the two-week immersion, students had an intensive business simulation training focusing on the following modules – Inter-personal Relationship in the Workplace and Professional Ethics, Communication Skills and Report Writing, Financial Literacy, Entrepreneurship and e-Commerce,Fundamentals of Operational Management, Computer Application,Career Directional Overview: New Skills and Jobs, and Introduction to Business Management and Marketing, which enabled the students to experience a different working-learning environment;thus, paved the way of enhancing their capabilities, skills and strengths.

Furthemore, the students explored the enchanting tourist destinations of Kuala Lumpur City, like the iconic Malaysian landmark and the world’s tallest twin structures-the Petronas Twin Tower, KL Tower, Independence Square, National Museum, King’s Palace, Royal Selangor, Central Market and theChocolate Gallery. The team also toured to Malacca City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This extraordinary privilege of embarking in a quest to enhance the students’ academic foundations is indeed a big help in their thrust to preparing themselves in the complexities of the modern workplace. Indeed, this immersion to an array of activities caters to the students’ understanding of how crucial it is to learn by experience.

The students were accompanied by Mrs. Jhonaliza F. Padilla and Mr. Christian Dulin, Basic Education Unit faculty.
