August 20-21, 2022 – SPUP and German Doctors for Developing Countries (e.V.) have formally commenced their collaborative project on “Improving the health situation in 15 villages through access to basic health care and income-generating measures.” The courtesy visit of Dr. Christine Winkelmann, (Member, Executive Board), Mr. Andreas Schmitz (Project Officer, Philippines), Ms. Pia Winter (Consultant, BMZ Projects) and Ms. Joelyn Soldevilla Biag, (Chief of Operations Office, Committee of German Doctors-Philippines) to Sr. Merceditas Ang, SPC, SPUP, University President) signaled the beginning of the partnership engagement of the two institutions aimed towards improving the health situation and quality of life of the vulnerable population in SPUP’s partner-communities as project areas.

As the project implementor, SPUP will facilitate the conduct of thirty (30) – day training of Barangay Health Workers (BNS) and Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) on Primary Health Care (PHC) and the provision of necessary equipment for community basic health care services. Moreover, the families of the trained BHWs/BNS will also be given opportunities to earn a living through the organized community savings groups.

Within a three-year period, the project is aimed to directly impact 710 people and reach 16,774 residents in the municipalities of Abulug, and Pamplona, Cagayan, and in the towns of Luna, Flora, and Pudtol in the Province of Apayao. The undertaking is supported by the Local Chief Executives of each project area.
