Eight Paulinian Student Nurses and one Clinical Instructor participated in the 2018 Joint Summer Program held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia on July 15-24, 2018. Representing SPUP-SNAHS were: Fatima Sheryl Agcaoili, Ron Russell Bringas, Chris Antoine Ladera, Reneilyn Robillos, Jovelyn Tagacay, Kristine Pablico, Ofelia Cuaresma, Valerie Andres, and Mrs. Maria Lourdes Saquing, MSN (CHN Instructor).
The Joint Summer Program was organized by STIKES Bethesda Yakkum Institute of Health in collaboration with Duta Wacana Christian University Office of International Affairs. The program was intended to raise awareness on water sustainability, to foster camaraderie and partnership among the participating Universities, and to promote Indonesian culture and heritage.
The summer program highlighted lectures regarding Water and Health, Interreligious Understanding and Peace-building in Indonesia, Community Empowerment, and a workshop-lecture regarding Water Sustainability which gave the participants an idea about Sky Water or processed rain water that can be used for drinking.
During the program, the participants also had Indonesian Language and Culture Courses and learned basic Bahasa Indonesia. In addition, the participants also had a live-in program in an arts and culture village in Tutup Ngisor Village where they immersed themselves in the community through a Homestay program. The participants were also taught to play the Gamelan (a traditional Indonesian instrument) and the villlagers’ traditional dance as well.
The program also drew attention to their heritage by touring the participants in their famous Borobudur and Prambanan temple, a Buddhist and Hindu temple respectively. The 10-day summer program ended with cultural presentations by the participating countries.
The Joint Summer Program with the theme: “The Importance of Water Sustainability” was attended by 27 students and 1 clinical instructor, 5 students came from Taiwan, 2 from South Korea, 2 from India, 8 students and 1 C.I. from the Philippines, and 10 from Indonesia.
