Jeremy Godofredo Morales, Ph.D., Director of International Relations, was one of the 15 selected Philippine HEI representatives who were sponsored by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) for Training on Internationalization of Higher Education dubbed as “Training Program on Internationalization of Higher Education in the Philippines: A Strategic Planning Professional Development Program” in Canada on June 24 – July 20, 2017 organized and facilitated by the Canadian Bureau of International Education (CBIE) in Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto, Canada.
The in-Canada study visit was first of the scheduled 7-month training program for the participants. Here the selected scholars underwent intensive lecture-discussions, training sessions on contextualizing internationalization of HE, and preparation and presentation of draft Strategic Internationalization Plan which were facilitated by Prof. Johannes Wilhelmus Maria "Hans" de Wit, Director of the Center for International Higher Education at Boston College (USA) and Prof. Sonja Knutson, the Director of the Internationalization Office at Memorial University of Newfoundland (Canada).
Aside from the training sessions, the participants also visited various internationally acclaimed Canadian HEIs for linkage and benchmarking purposes. Among these universities are Carleton University, Algonquin College and University of Ottawa in Ottawa; Concordia University and McGill University in Montreal; Ryerson University, McMaster University, Centennial College, Seneca College, Niagara College, York University and University of Guelph in Toronto. The participants were given presentations and sharing of the internationalization process of these institutions as well as walk tour of their campuses specifically on facilities, laboratories and business and interdisciplinary incubation centers.
The training program is part of four programs included in the delivery of the “Implementation of Higher Education In Canada for K to 12 Project”, of the CHED and the CBIE. Morales attended the said training program whose aim is to guide select faculty from Philippine HEIs through a training program which will take place over the course of seven (7) months, including online/long-distance, in-Canada and in country training aspects. The objective of the program is to provide participants with assistance in the development of institutional internationalization strategies and implementation planning including best practices, partnership building, curriculum development, research opportunities and funding mechanisms in support of their institution and personnel during the K to 12 Transition period.
