On June 1-3, 2017, SPUP’s School of Information Technology and Engineering (SITE) spearheaded the conduct of the 19th Regional Cyber Summit. With the theme: “Global Technology Ventures: Big Data Analytics, Innovation, and Transmission,” the regional convention fostered an avenue for a scholarly gathering of Information Technology (IT) and Engineering students, practitioners, engineers and professionals from Regions 1, 2, 8, 10 and CAR.
Held at the Mo. Madeleine Hall, this year’s Cyber Summit focused on: 1) the provision of platforms through which ICT & Engineering educators and students tackle technology driven trends, issues and innovations on big data analytics relative to the demands of the changing global labour market; 2) the creation of collective awareness and meaningful experiences pertinent to occupational health and safety for engineering and IT professionals and students; and, 3) the showcase of entrepreneurial and innovative ideas technological developments and solutions.
The Opening Program consisted of the Welcome Address of Sr. Merceditas Ang, SPC (University President); Inspirational Message of Dr. Honorato Alzate, (Director, CHED RO2); and, the Plenary Session of Dr. Giged T. Battung, (Program Coordinator, Distance/Transnational Education) on Utilizing Integrative e-Learning for BSIT Program.
Mr. Rey Tuddao (CHED Supervisor, ITE), started the second day of the summit by discussing the Curriculum Development and Curriculum Model for ITE programs. This was followed by the conferences on Big Data Analytics by Mrs. Maria Fe N. Ferriols (President and Chief Operating Officer Beacon Frontline Solutions, Inc.) and on Information Technology Security and Assurance by Mr. Mac Allen Reonel Sebastian Cacacho (Founder and CEO of HackTheNorth.ph).
The third day was dedicated to sharing of best practices and research presentations. The members of the HackTheNorth.ph engaged the participants with their ideas, insights and success stories on startup business ventures; while, Ms. Annjeanette Alain D. Galang and Mr. Joseph Byron Hallar shared the results of their study on Data Mining and Data Analytics respectively.
The convention ended with the election of officers of the Philippine Society of Information Technology Educators Foundation, Inc. (PSITE) – Region 2 facilitated by Dr. Cecilia Mercado, (Vice President for Luzon, PSITE). The newly elected officers were: Maria Visitacion N. Gumabay, DIT (President); Billy S. Javier, PhD (Vice-President); Rose A. Mary Velasco (Secretary); Rosalinda B. Guiyab (Treasurer); Mr. Ramoncito Adducul (Auditor); Luisa Aquino, Wilyn Marzo, Romeo Evangelista, Emerito Lañojan, Segundo Pacris Jr. (Representatives).
SPUP’s School of Information Technology and Engineering (SITE) is designated by CHED as a Center of Development in Information Technology Education.
