May 06, 2017 - SPUP’s 110th founding anniversary commemoration was also celebrated in the Indigenous People (IP) community at Barangay Agugaddan, Peñablanca, Cagayan. This highlighted SPUP’s commitment to service as the celebration with the Agta Community was in the form of a Medical-Dental mission. Spearheaded by the University’s Community Development Center (CDC), School of Medicine (SOM) and Health Services Unit (HSU), the said engagement activity was made possible through the support of the Basic Education Unit (BEU) Family Council, BPI Bayan Team, SPU Multi-Purpose Cooperative, SPUP Alumni Association (SPUPAA), Dr. Meneses Medical Clinic (DMMC), Nestle Corporation, Westmont, Pediatrica, Intermed, Philippine Pediatrics Society (PPS) - Tacloban and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Peñablanca. A good number of SPUP Faculty, Staff and Students also rendered their services as volunteers to the said activity.
With the apparent lack of health services in the area, the Medical-Dental Mission aimed to aid the basic health needs of the IP community. The endeavor included free medical check-up and consultation, surgical operation (circumcision), dental services (tooth extraction) and provision of medicines and health kits. Other activities were carried out like parlor games for children by the BEU Family Council and BPI Bayan Team, gift giving to the members of the community by SPUP-SOM, home visitation by SPUP Staff and dialogue with the Women’s Group initiated by Social Work-Graduate School Students. Moreover, the said community engagement activity was conducted as part of the service-learning program of the School of Medicine.
As an adopted community of SPUP, the IP group of Agugaddan serves as a hub of SPUP’s Service-Learning Program. Teacher Education, Nursing, Business and Accountancy Programs had instituted developmental service-learning design and regularly conduct activities for the benefit of the said community.
